Narrative

Ernest John Meaney applied to join the Australian Army Service Corps on 28 March 1940 at Hawthorn, Victoria. He was 21 years 8 months old, single and before World War II he was a motor mechanic. Ernie was allocated the regimental number VX116744 and taken on strength of the No 2 COY AASC on 28 March 1940. He trained at Bonegilla, Victoria, during which time he was admitted to hospital on two occassions, once for an unspecified disease and later for a snake bite. On 28 August 1941 he disembarked at Singapore. Ernest was reported as missing on 6 April 1942 and on 9 June 1943 he was declared a Prisoner of War in Malaya (now Malaysia). Ernie died of the illness avitaminosis (chronic or long-term vitamin deficiency) in Siam (now Thailand) on 20 September 1943. He was 24 years old. After the war, Ernest's body was exhumed from Chungkai and reburied at the Kanchanaburi Allied War Cemetery, Thailand. Ernie left all of his belongings to his sister, Joan Margaret Meaney's, education.
